How to care for an umbrella so it lasts years
Most umbrellas do not break. They are broken — usually by being shoved wet into a bag or slammed shut against a car door frame. Five minutes of habit adds years of life.
Always dry it open, never closed
This is the one rule that matters most. Leave the umbrella open, or at least loosely folded, in a well-ventilated room until it is dry. Closing a wet canopy traps moisture against the ribs and joints, which corrodes metal parts and lets mildew spot the fabric.
Do not dry it on a radiator or with a hairdryer. Heat degrades the water-repellent coating and can shrink the canopy against the frame.
Shake, do not wring
Give it two or three firm shakes point-down to throw off the bulk of the water. Never twist or wring the canopy — it stretches the fabric off the rib tips, which is where most tears begin.
Cleaning
Open the umbrella, sponge the canopy with lukewarm water and a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then rinse with clean water and leave open to dry. Avoid detergent, bleach and washing machines — all three strip the coating.
For stubborn city grime on a clear PVC or PU dome, plain water and a soft microfibre cloth is safest; solvents cloud the plastic permanently.
Look after the mechanism
Never force an auto-open umbrella closed by pushing on the canopy. Press the button, let the ribs retract, then push the shaft down smoothly. Forcing it is the most common cause of a failed auto mechanism.
If the runner starts to feel gritty, a tiny amount of dry silicone spray on the shaft — not oil, which attracts dirt — restores the action. Wipe off any excess.
Restoring water repellency
After a few years the coating wears and water stops beading. A spray-on fabric water repellent, applied to a clean dry canopy outdoors and left to cure, brings most of it back. Two light coats work better than one heavy one.
Storage
Store dry, loosely sleeved, out of direct sunlight. UV fades canopy dye and makes fabric brittle over time, which is why a car parcel shelf is the worst place to keep a spare umbrella and a door pocket is one of the best.
When it inverts in the wind
Turn to face away from the wind and let it pop back the right way rather than pulling at the ribs. Once it has re-formed, open and close it slowly a couple of times to check the ribs have seated properly.
Common questions
Should I dry my umbrella open or closed?
Open, or loosely folded, in a ventilated room. Closing it wet traps moisture against the frame and causes rust and mildew.
Can I put an umbrella in the washing machine?
No. A machine wash strips the water-repellent coating and can damage the frame. Sponge the canopy with lukewarm soapy water instead.
How do I make my umbrella waterproof again?
Clean and fully dry the canopy, then apply a spray-on fabric water repellent in two light coats outdoors and let it cure before folding.
