Compact & Folding Umbrellas

The best umbrella is the one you actually have with you. A compact folds to roughly the length of a paperback, which means it lives in a bag or a car door pocket instead of by the front door.

Every compact here opens and closes at the press of a button, which matters when one hand is holding shopping or a child.

Choosing a compact umbrella

Check the closed length against the bag you carry daily — around 30cm fits most work bags and rucksacks. Then check the open diameter: about 100cm covers one adult and a bag comfortably.

Do not assume compacts are weak in wind. A vented compact with fibreglass ribs handles a gust better than a basic full-size steel umbrella.

  • Closed length ~30cm for a work bag or glovebox
  • Automatic open and close for one-handed use
  • Fibreglass ribs, not steel
  • A quick-dry coated canopy so it does not sit damp in your bag

Common questions

Will a compact umbrella fit in a handbag?
A three-fold compact typically closes to about 30cm, which fits most handbags, work bags, rucksacks and car door pockets.
Are folding umbrellas less strong than full-size ones?
Not inherently. Strength comes from rib count, rib material and canopy venting rather than from the shaft being one piece or three.
What is an automatic umbrella?
One button opens the canopy and a second press retracts it; you then push the shaft down to collapse it. It is designed for one-handed use.
