Automatic Umbrellas
Automatic opening is not a gimmick. It is the difference between a five-second and a thirty-second job at a car door in the rain, with shopping in the other hand.
These models all open at the press of a button, and the auto open-and-close models retract the canopy the same way.

Auto open versus auto open-and-close
Auto open means one button raises the canopy; you close it by hand. Auto open-and-close means a second press retracts the ribs and you simply push the shaft down. The second type is the one worth having if you are often getting in and out of a car.
Never force an automatic umbrella shut by pushing on the canopy — press the button first. Forcing it is the most common cause of a failed mechanism.
Common questions
- What is the difference between auto open and auto open-and-close?
- Auto open raises the canopy at the press of a button but closes manually. Auto open-and-close also retracts the ribs at a press, so you only push the shaft down.
- Can I close an automatic umbrella by hand?
- Press the release button first, then push the shaft down smoothly. Pushing the canopy in against the mechanism can damage it.
