What you are paying for
Cheap umbrellas fail at the joints — the runner, the rib tips and the notch that holds the canopy open. A better umbrella spends its budget there, plus on a denser canopy fabric with a coating that keeps beading after several seasons.
A wooden or resin crook handle also changes how the umbrella carries: it hooks over a forearm when you need both hands, and it is far less likely to be left behind on a train.
